winograd has this line about three basic cognitive aspects of how to interact with our surroundings: manipulation, locomotion and communication.

of course manipulation is from latin for hand and do things to objects.

the first thing users did with computers was manipulation, moving objects around, drag and drop. then came the web and in its first phase it was basically: go and look, read only for most of its users: go and have a look. the surfing metapher, winograd suggests, was therefore accepted and undestood easily as the web meant locomotion. now, with web 2.0 we might be back at manipulation ...
