3G - gee whiz!

european telcos are moaning. a lot of their hopes get dashed. whom of them would like to say in public that - after all their investment - they will stuck with voice services for a while.

wlan is out there right now, wap sucks but they want to stay with that. intel: "we have to live with it, because there is nothing better around." - do those people ever think that they need users??? (intel by the way is investing in wlan, as is microsoft. they support 802.11x but not bluetooth.)

chtml is used by japan and korea for their 3g versions. korea has already more than 20 devices out there, nothing is going without colour screen and java. and most important: it is working already. more than 1.2 millione subscribers. (source: jane zweig, shosteck group) the difference to europe: they don´t care about downgradeability.

korea doesn´t use umts, they use cdma1xrtt - oh well the european union hates that. now a lot of eu project have to present their work also on a mobile device, using wap, otherwise you don´t get the money. interesting, but i don´t think that will help.

mms (multimedia messaging service), the new baby, and dream of bringing revenues also has a lot of uncertainty in it, just because sms worked, it doesn´t mean people will send home a "picture from the beach" in the same manner. to get this in a good quality is too costintensive anyhow.

"a 3.5mb file, a short video, low resolution, would cost telcos more than 10$ to deliver in the 2.5 G world". again nobody is talking about the cost for the enduser yet. and, so jane zweig, nobody asks: does it make sense?

but those people already have a blue eye, so let them dream about 2010 - the new date of hope for telcos in europe: in a recent study you can find the following: "by 2010, total 3g services provider-retained worldwide revenues from all 3g services are forcast to reach $322 billion. this represents cumulative revenues of over one trillion dollars from now to 2010." (umts forum)

well, i think until 2010 a lot of stories will be told. some people prefer to talk about 4g already. whatever that should be.

umtsa

woman to quote on that jane zweig, the shosteck group, her talk about "the new wireless piranhas" was the best of the day. she said straight: 3g? financial burden is too high: in selected countries the costs for the infrastructure would be around 750 billion dollar. who would pay that?? 3g should go for low bandwith services, wlan and bluetooth for high bandwith services. even ricochets´ metricom and last week mobilestar went out of business, she things, it will fill the gap: it´s available now. it will add some value: complement technology, the name it here. well the frequences wlan is using is free. so there are some political questions envolved as well as security.

takeshi natsuni - it´s a shame, but the ntt docomo people are as strict in not giving interviews as telefonica - wasn´t as harsh at the umts community as he was in germany, but he said something the people here don´t like to hear: we have to get more of the internet way of thinking into the mobile world. normalmente these guys just say: keep those people out, because they have the notion: everything has to be for free. we can´t have this in here, because we have already invested too much."

im gegensatz was man so in den letzten tagen lesen konnte, meint hier bei der konferenz niemand, dass voice das argument für die zukunft von 3g sei. schon allein, weil die billing methode zu wenig einbringt.

it´s data, java, mp3, html, ... a lot of plattform discussion in here también. open architecture is one of the keywords in a lot of speeches.

the location this year is a sport hall. so you have signs for dressing rooms, a volleyballnet above your head or the speeches are held in a tent. the so called important part of the conference, where the future of 3g and new business modells are discussed, is happening in a room the sign outside says: springschnur(r)hüpfen: how should i interpret that???

preparing

next week umts conference en barna. too many people, less hope that there is really something interesting, useful, desireable going on. if nothing else but marketing, i hope at least to get good food. umtsa umtata ...

a lot of people at these kind of events hand you over their cards with following line on it: imagineering and futurology. you look up, talk and you read it again coming to the conclusion: no future, no imagineering at all. sorry, good bye.

LOL just found in the program following panel discussion. last year there was a lot of moaning about media. oh well, now they set up the following: is the press to blame for overhyping WAP and 3G? si, claro. put the blame on the other side. especially on copy and paste.

What is the current view among journalists about the prospects for 3G? nada. no existe. journalists don´t need to have a view, editors say.

Is the mobile industry being honest to journalists about the technology and business challenges that lie ahead? come on

Does industry need to work harder to educate journalists? por favor. cómo? would be fun to watch, when people, who haven´t learned something seriously train people who ...

Is the mainstream media losing interest in mobile Internet and 3G? so what do you want now.

Is the mobile industry telling the truth to journalists about health issues? oh, so that is a topic? nothing else to say, eh?

solamente editors are sitting on the panel, talking down to marketing people.
