"Today telcos behave much like time sharing computing in the 60s" (bill.st.arnaud) for grid computing you need a network. a fast network. therefore the canarie project is trying to push something like: purchase networks like computers. that means: buy your own wavelength. it's good for telcos, arnaud says: they finally get some money back for their digging, and finally more than 1% (some say 2) of the fibre network would get lit up and be in use. somehow they are promoting the line: let the customer/private community solve the problem with the last mile, which can be an opportunity. it is good for those who want to force the development of bandwith intens applications: since years movie is the only one out there. and as people want to push grid computing for research and teaching, well you wont get it if schools, libraries and universities have to pay for time and traffic. "Extending the Internet model of autonomous peering networks to the telecom world"the catchline for politicians and moneylender in the outline of the project canarie sounds as always really pathetical: Canada could be poised to be a world leader in the 'optical age'. Silicon Valley was the capital of the 'silicon age'; Britain was the capital of the industrial age. (community condo fiber networks) still, everything sounds a little bit more advanced as the "access for all" period some years ago. ... Link (0 comments) ... john battelle, the guy who has organized this conference were nobody who attented was allowed to quote anyone, is writing on a book on google. somehow i wonder, if they reduced their prices by making it a promotion tour and therefore got invited by the various companies as their speakers. he didn't say anything new, simply repeated what he said already elsewhere, just added something to his bio by mentioning that he started to report on computers in the mid 80s, mainly about apple; some more numbers that out of my perspective were wrong: it's easy to say there is more profit, when you don't take in account the growing numbers of users. haven't seen that he did that. "everyone his own wavelenght". first reminded me on the 90s and the "access for all" movement. but i like optics, so i was interested. private owned fibre networks, that's where the canadien are heading to. it seems with the new lasers who can reach now a distance of 300 km, they can solve the maintenance problem far cheaper. of course cisco is one and the most interested financier, waiting in the backjard. the projects are at least interesting and bill st. arnaud a nice and enthusiastic guy who safed my day. he also is the one and only so far that i listened to that didn't promote an upcoming book. ca4net is worth a look. ... by holography is something nils (audio/mpeg, 151 KB) abramson worked on in the 70s. to describe light (audio/mpeg, 486 KB) in flight recording is not easy, nils says. he also isn´t very satisfied with his oral explanation on how to freeze (audio/mpeg, 759 KB) . but if it wasn´t good enough, you also can have a look at his paper ellipsoids in holography and relativity, he finally has put online. spie cd-rom: 24 years of development of the optical society. wanna have. especialmente disk II which covers a three-dimensional imaging discussion from 1977 con nils about three-dimensional <information> and a paper on "holographic movie process in the ussr" from v. g. koma. well, i guess it should be victor g. komar. he has build a "3d static holographic image projector". ...
