european networking

some documents are back to the surface: european informatics networking.

GESCHEHEN zu Brûssel am dreiundzwanzigsten November neunzehnhunderteinundsiebzig.
DONE at Brussels on the twenty-third day of November in the year one thousand nine hundred and seventy-one. | treaty EIN

germany it seems was not amused and waited until 1976 to sign the treaty.

also the iiasa papers of alexandr butrimenko are freed from dust. nicenicenice.

butrimenko and ulrike sichra (both from iiasa) were describing how to implement pay function and priority service for packet switched networks in 1976.

the main idea arises from the the assumption that between the authorities responsible for running the network and the users, an agreement on charges can be achieved depending on the performance-delivery time | priorities and pay function routing for a packet switched network

the ptts must have loved it.

old players for new networks

three projects for future networks for academia that goes beyond writing patches for the old one.

and the first thing that makes me wonder is why the players - countrywise are the same as 50 years ago. us::eu::japan. missing china.

anyhow the game began: us comes i with geni with an old acquaintance on board: bbn, bolt beranek and newman (remember imps and tips and arpanet?) europe calls it: future-internet adhere the bad habit of using a hyphen in the url. and japan also has something up and running, called new generation networking and universal communication. not sure if yoshihide suga meant that in his talk or something completely different.

the story as freeman is seeing it at cacm. he was involved in setting up geni.

btw: von neumann's "the computer and a brain", 1958 is now available at acm classic books, not quite yet ...

i can't deny, i have deep respect for that guy. i like his humour and his style. | thanks chris

... i am giving up trying to give any predict about europe, because you are keeping redefining yourself by adding countries ...

the sigma 7 [in use for the arpanet at ucla] is now in a museum and some people think i should be there, too | vint in zuerich

ps: talking about internet connection: i get mad when i think about kyoto or even vienna, here, thanks to dtcom i reach a download rate of 12 kb - right now. paying 58€ for approximately 3mb down. now i know how 1989 must have felt, when german still counted bauds while others get used to kb. ¿unbundling? still bond to fixed telefon lines. want to live with symmetry and not in the stone age.
