"the chip" motzes, 12.07.2003 18:40h
published originally 1985 and revised 2001. looking forward to read. just some more days of work to earn the money back i just spend on books ... t.r. reid wrote: "the idea occurred to jack kilby at the height of summer, when everyone else was on vacation and he had the lab to himself ..." someone else found out that "a kansas blizzard changed jack kilby’s life in ways that he would never dream ..." g. (found at jack kilby boyhood home celebration) robert noyce got a far better line: "With his strong face, his athlete's build, and the Gary Cooper manner, Bob Noyce projected what psychologists call the halo effect. People with the halo effect seem to know exactly what they're doing and moreover make you want to admire them for it. They make you see the halos over their heads." -- Tom Wolfe. "The Tinkerings of Robert Noyce: How the Sun Rose on the Silicon Valley." Esquire. December 1983couldn't find the esquire article online just this nice substitute: "Silicon Valley and Route 128: Two Faces of the American Technopolis" by paul mackun. ... Link (0 comments) ... acm has a new publication: queue, created by computing professionals for computing professionals.no journalism involved. there is no need for this crowd anyhow. even if they would just write down their acm members conversation, they can deliver far more interesting content. the same would be true for ifac, another long in the field traditional club. and they are doing it: editorial board member and acm award winner jim gray had a conversation with the acm member david patterson on storage systems and more. ( thanks chris). nice piece: and an example for how different a story can sound when you use history to describe the (maybe) upcoming. ACM Queue sets out to dissect and decompose issues with the same sort of intelligence and discipline that engineers and developers bring to their own work. ... Link (0 comments) ...
