sri anniversary

poor chaps at the battlefield. not only that they have to use uranium bullets, which means that they empoison themselves when they shoot, which happened already in the war in kosovo and in irak, now there is another vision out there which states, that they should be treated by robots, as there won't be docs outside in the battlefield. tell mum, that her child is not just going to war, but joining a test, will ya? anyhow, that is one vision out of standard research institute (sri), funded by darpa and told by curt carlson in an interview.

So the patient would be on it--first in a battlefield situation where a robot would be able to clean the patient's suture wounds, take blood samples tests, and be connected back to an operator at a remote site to be able to take care of patients.

not too new, but more real than before and quoted in an article for the 60th anniversary. recalling a time when three guys wanted to build a research foundation. but as sri itself tells the story the idea goes back to 1925, when robert e. swain had a vision ...

a lost interview with co-inventor j. presper eckert. (via digging-deeper-than-telling robert. muchas gracias guapo;)

Well, a person with a paper and pencil can add two 10-digit numbers in about 10 seconds. With a hand calculator the time is down to 4 seconds. The Harvard Mark 1 was the last of the electromechanical computers -- it could add two 10-digit numbers in 0.3 seconds, about 30 times faster than paper and pencil.
