not so bad to look through idm. at least in this older issue i found a link for <historic>: microprocessors of the past and present. the table of contents looks promising. another chronology, recently updated and research material for a book project, using - as it seems to me - a lot out of the patent database. also nice findings like: 1969. (month unknown) * Honeywell releases the H316 "Kitchen Computer", the first home computer, priced at US$10,600 in the Neiman Marcus catalog the guy also has other timelines on handhelds, commodore, workstations, amiga, video games, ... His Day Job I currently work for the BC Ministry of Forests, in the Research Branch. I work in the Forest Productivity section. Within that, I am in the Stand Modelling Unit, as the Stand Modelling Analyst. I am a computer programmer working in modelling how trees and forests grow. I apply my interest in graphics and raytracing in as much of the work as I can. ... Link (0 comments) ... Comment time to look back motzes, 16.02.2002 23:34h
being sick means a lot of links :) therefore i really have to thank chris for his pointer to this archive and to the st72. in the old days there was no pdf, just a shaky hand, a camera and a xerox smalltalk72manual (video/quicktime, 973 KB) both together brought me to an old interview with nikolaus wirth irgendwann einmal geht es nicht mehr weiter and following quote: Im Moment taucht der Begriff "objektorientierte Programmierung" immer häufiger auf: Was halten Sie von diesem neuen Konzept? Die Idee entstand schon 1965 in Simula (link out of mr. tinys linkpool). ... vannevar bush predicting the future:as we may think editors note: "he urges that men of science should then turn to the massive task of making more accessible our bewildering store of knowledge." writing about science in general, development, lost ideas, that got lost and have been found again, photography and, ... claro: Two centuries ago Leibnitz invented a calculating machine which embodied most of the essential features of recent keyboard devices, but it could not then come into use. The economics of the situation were against it: the labor involved in constructing it, before the days of mass production, exceeded the labor to be saved by its use, since all it could accomplish could be duplicated by sufficient use of pencil and paper. Moreover, it would have been subject to frequent breakdown, so that it could not have been depended upon; for at that time and long after, complexity and unreliability were synonymous. ...
