That used to be an easy one
it processed messages
by, i think Wes Clark's suggestion, it was separated from the host computer, ergo an interface processor (like a dedicated I/O processor earlier on.
Maybe i am too serious here.
An interfaith processor would have fit for two reasons: the network was considered reliable, the diversity of hosts was not large but considerable anyhow.
