what an archive! motzes, 26.08.2006 16:07h
academician a.ershov's archive, highly recommended. business letters of the computing center of ussr as and the computing center of the siberian branch of ussr as (1959-1974) correspondence with zemanek 1984, preparation for the 25th anniversary of ifip. or another interesting example: letter from shirley marks, rand corp about their joss project, 1968. | again paul armer ;) however it is our continuing policy to disseminate general information on joss to all who desire it the newsletters '71 are freely available. may 71: the mobile console in an ideal world, there would be as many blue consoles (and corresponding channels to the joss computer) as there are potential users at a moment in time. lacking such a utopia, we must allocate our limited resources ... the wheels of the console bring the computer into your office as a handy tool, along with the telephone, the chalkboard, and the well-stuffed bookcase ... glad i missed the time-sharing area, even some recall this time as social community building. co-operative work, ie ... in the late 50s people were not just trying to find a name for the discipline "computing" but - at least one - also got annoyed about the use of the word program. we need replacements for all forms of the word "program." Let me cite two recent examples from Electronic News. "Gates offers Automatic Programmer" headlined an article about a device to provide unattended operation of a radio station. "Programmer Specs to Spin' AF Auto Test" leads off an article on automatic electronic test equipment for weapon systems. It's even possible these days to discuss "the Dynamic Programming programming program, paul armer | cacm january 1959 well, today everything became a "program". ... Link (0 comments) ... computer museum has a pdp-1 restauration project up and running | brouhaha 1955 ibm wasn't entered a bid but wasn't able to deliver the desired machine, so proposed a more powerful one. nice turn, but it didn't help. the people from the university of california radiation laboratory didn't swallow it. two years later the supercomputer project became known as stretch aka ibm 7030; memos circulate since november 1955. Although Stretch was indeed the world's most powerful supercomputer when it was finally introduced, and retained that position until 1964, it fell short of the projected performance. IBM cut the price of the system, originally $13.5 million, nearly in half. | brouhaha famous and ahead of its time was - regarding to an article in the honeywell computer journal, 1972 - also another machine which listened to the name gamma 60, publicly described in the us in 1958 and was brought to the world by compagnie des machines bull. ...
