ok, ifa

Toshiba may not launch HD DVD products until 2006, breaking its previously stated deadline for the introduction of the technology. (the register)
the battle is not so uninteresting to watch, even not so different to others on standards and formats: sony has blu-ray, bought mgm and has columbia tristar and disney in its boad. on the other side stands toshiba with time warner, universal and paramount. 20th century fox hasn't decided yet, which keeps the run open. (hddvd) there have been negotiations going on for a while and toshiba's announcement to go its way. but now their flag waves: wait.

hey, ifa2005 people, the acronym hdtv has a long history and died out not just once, according to the pointer above:

dead video: ...Panasonic HDTV, (1974), dead color television formats: Baird Telechrome, HDTV, PALplus letterbox format, etc

well, 'the other' view, interesting hdtv battle and history - maybe not so different at all, in the end ...
