internet experiment

internet experiment note index, 29.jul 1977 - sept-82 some words about catenet there.

the question arose if catenet was the first name that described what we now call the internet and just wasn't used because english speaking people had no idea how to pronounce it right.

but as i can ask and are following too many speculations lately anyhow, here is vint's chronology to the naming:

I used the term in a very early paper (IEN 48) in part to acknowledge Louis Pouzin's work at IRIA. The term "internetwork" was used in the paper that Bob Kahn and I wrote in May 1974 and the foreshortened "internet" emerged in the December 1974 TCP specification in the title.

Catenet was a foreshortened form of "concatenation of network" but "internet" seemed to resonate more in day-to-day speech. | vint cerf

thanks! defining terms discussed at ietf

there is internet with capital i, and well, one can go on:intercomputer networking, inter-netting, ... count the latter as my favourite.
